A vintage fried pastry recipe where dough strips are wrapped around wooden clothespins to create a spiral shape, then fried and sugared. Attributed to 'Alaska's Kitchen'.

Ingredients

  • 4 count eggs(beaten until light)
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening(melted)
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda (baking soda)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Fat(for deep frying)
  • Powdered sugar(for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. 1

    Beat 4 eggs until light.

  2. 2

Add sugar, melted shortening, and milk to the eggs.

  3. 3

Sift bread flour with soda, cream of tartar, and nutmeg.

  4. 4

Add the dry ingredients to the first (wet) mixture.

  5. 5

Immerse clothespins first in hot fat so dough will not stick.

This instruction appears at the bottom of the card but is a preparatory step.

  6. 6

Roll dough 1/4 inch thick and cut in strips 9 inches long and 1/2 inch wide.

  7. 7

Wrap strips around nine-inch clothespins starting just above the division in the clothespins. Slip the end of dough between the two tips of the pin.

  8. 8

Lay in fat heated to 375 degrees.

  9. 9

    Drain on brown paper.

  10. 10

Take out clothespins and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
